Patrick was diagnosed with AdCC of the parotid gland in 1985, after one year of being misdiagnosed with
sinus infections. He was diagnosed with metastatic AdCC of the lungs in 1990. He endured the pain of
many surgeries and radiation treatments over the years and was also diagnosed with Prostate Cancer
during this time. He came to our listserv group in May of 1999 and his very first posts were the
beginning of his journey as this group's spiritual leader. He gave support, love, guidance, and
sometimes a little debating when he felt it was necessary. He was a most welcome addition to this
group. When he passed away in October of 2000, he left many friends on this group. I am including
a post that he made to this group in June 1999 that is so typically Patrick:
"Here are the top ten positive side effects I've experienced as a recipient of AdCC:
10. Finding out all hospital billing departments have their heads up their arse.
9. Getting some money back on my taxes at age 52.
8. Finding out that some pompous doctors are in fact very caring and considerate people
7. Meeting a host of wonderful nurses.
6. The ability to lay on my right side at night and not hear a thing.
5. The ability of sitting in a business meeting, forget an important detail and say "Oh I'm sorry I
didn't hear that".
4. Learning to be my own doctor and a good one at that.
3. Getting sympathy from all, even when I'm being a complete arsehole.
2. Looking around and seeing nature not problems.
And the top positive side effect is:
1. Finding out I having an address book stacked with true friends."
Your friends miss you Patrick,
Take care, Sharon
Patrick fought hard and long to get donations for research into this disease; therefore, a memorial
fund has been set up in Patrick's name at the National Organization of Rare Disorders:
